Cult and King Jelly

Curls styled with Jelly and Max Green Styling Gel

Welcome to my little blog-corner of sorts! I'll be using this space to flesh out thoughts about hair products and services as an alternative to video-heavy social media platforms because honestly, I don't want to have to dance around to legitimize my thoughts 😅

Today I want to gush about Jelly from Cult&King. This is one of those products I didn't know I'd love so dang much until I had it in my hands. I've used a million salt sprays and have never stayed loyal to a singular brand. To me they all left the hair in a varying degree of rough dryness, and for my curlier clients they were prone to activating their curl-halo into a cloud of thick frizz. Some had so much salt they left the hair looking dusty. Not cute. I felt like Goldilocks as I cycled through them over the years.

I remember trying Cult and King back in 2017, but at the time the line was definitely geared towards barbers; I loved their mission, but there wasn't enough in the line to get me to place an order. Fast forward to 2022 and they had expanded into more non gendered, multipurpose products with high quality skincare based formulas. I finally took the plunge and ordered some travel bottles and was hooked.

First and foremost- the packaging 😍. Infinitely recyclable, beautifully textured glass with aluminum and glass pipette. The only plastic is the bulb on the dropper. It comes in a sleek cardboard tube, and has a metal funnel enclosed for refilling. Genius.

I feel like I'm becoming one of those recipe blogs where you have to sift through pages of text before you get to the info you want. 😅

The reason I love using and recommending Jelly is the quality of ingredients and the versatility. Think of Jelly as a salt-gel hybrid. Unlike most salt sprays, Jelly has a light to medium hold based on how much you use, and creates SHINE in the hair. On wet hair Jelly behaves first like a gel. You can layer Jelly on top of your usual gel or foam to cause expansion in your waves or curls, making your curl set more like "day two hair" without sacrificing your definition. Jelly is incredibly friendly to finer-textured folks as it's weightless, volumizing, and doesn't exacerbate oiliness at the scalp. Jelly boasts three different salts in it's formulation, but doesn't come off as rough or dusty when in the hair. I use it on my own hair for my blowout, and I never notice my hair catching or pulling on my brush like I do when I use a strong foam. I get borderline Dorothy Hamil levels of volume, and a huge reduction in midday greasiness on my bangs.

On dry hair Jelly behaves much more like a texturizing salt spray, but because its housed in a cream gel base it dries instantly, minimizing the chances of activating frizz.

Jelly Cocktails:

  • For more definition, layer Jelly on top of I Create Volume, or Organic Chemistry Gel.

  • For extra volume and hold, layer Jelly on top of I Create Lift, I Create Definition, or JMO Foam

  • For super soft natural definition, layer with C&K Style, or Afterworld Organics Moisture Lock.

For max texture, just use lots of Jelly! You can grab Jelly at your next appointment, ordering direct to your door using my affiliate links, or you can place an order through my online store for pickup.
